Public Works Department

Public Works Department is responsible for road works including maintenance on National Highways, State Highways and Major District Roads and construction & maintenance of Government Buildings. It also undertakes construction on behalf of other department under the Deposit Contribution Works.

• Plan, design, construct and maintain a safe, technically sound and cost effective road network. Enhance connectivity to remote and isolated areas.
• Construct and maintain the bridges.
• Plan and construct Government buildings that are functional and energy efficient.
• Adopt innovative measures to improve quality and reduce cost in construction and maintenance

Objectives:

• To develop State Highways to meet the growing traffic density.
• To ensure efficient & safe transportation through well maintained road network.
• To improve existing State Highways and Major District Roads.
• To construct efficient public & residential buildings.
• To construct new bridges and re-construct dilapidate bridges.
• To improve roads under SCSP & TSP schemes.
• To redress road deficiency in backward taluks.
• To enhance the technical capacity of engineers.
• To update and reconcile immovable properties register in each division and establish “Right of Way” of State Highways
• Preparation of architectural drawings to Government buildings.

Functions:

• Development & maintenance of National Highway, State Highway and Major District Roads.
• Construction & maintenance of public buildings and residential quarters.
• Preparation of Schedule of Rates every year to enable all Government departments & local bodies in the preparation of DPRs.
• Preparation of plinth area rates for various types of buildings.
• Preparation of architectural drawings for Government buildings.
• Conducting a detailed traffic survey once in 5 years and annual sample survey for State Highway and Major District Roads.
• Implementation of Karnataka Highways Act-1964.
• Provide technical assistance / solutions to other departments.

PWD Kodagu Division :

Public Works Department Kodagu Division is situated in District Head quarters Madikeri. Executive Engineer is the head of the Division. Kodagu Division is responsible for road works including maintenance of State Highways and Major District Roads and construction & maintenance of Government Buildings in Kodagu District.

There are three Sub-divisions under Kodagu division situated in Madikeri, Somawarpet and Virajpet. Assistant Executive Engineer is the head of the Sub-Division.
